A week out of Manresa.

A week based in Manresa, where Os grew up, in place of Hanoi and Thailand. Montserrat is 20 minutes away, Barcelona and Sitges about an hour, and Dalí’s museum in Figueres two. Os is injured, so all of it is picked for few steps. Ideas rather than a plan.

The idea

Hanoi and Thailand came off when Os got injured, and this is what the week became instead: Manresa, where Os grew up, as the base, and day trips out from it. Os’s parents may join for some of them.

Everything below is an option rather than a plan. It is sorted by how far it is from Manresa, because the drive decides the day more than the place does. None of it is booked, and the dates are rough.

  • Few steps, on purpose. Os is not walking far. Everything here was picked for seats, lifts, level ground and a car park near the door, and the cards say where that breaks down.
  • One thing a day. Barcelona and Sitges are an hour or more each way and Figueres is two. A trip out and a slow evening back in Manresa is a full day.
  • It assumes a car. Trains reach Barcelona in about 1 h 25 on either the R5 or the R4, and Sitges with a change. Cardona, Sant Benet and the Dalí day do not work without one.
  • October is the wet month. Around 20 °C by day on the coast and 9 °C at dawn in Manresa. Rain comes in whole days, so the indoor cards are worth holding back for one.

What the calendar decides

Not a schedule. Only what each day rules in or out.

  1. Mon 19 Oct
    In

Arrival, roughly. Sant Benet and the Dalí museum are both reported closed on Mondays, so nothing is lost by doing nothing.

  2. Tue 20 Oct
    Market day in Vic

The first of two. Sant Benet may still be closed.

  3. Wed 21 to Fri 23
    The open days

Everything on the page is open. Midweek is the calm time for Montserrat, the Sagrada Família and Figueres, so the long trips fit best here.

  4. Sat 24 Oct
    Market day again

Vic’s bigger market. Sant Benet keeps its longest hours. Montserrat is at its busiest and the choir may not sing.

  5. Sun 25 Oct
    The clocks go back

An extra hour at 03:00, and sunset moves from about 18:55 to 17:55. Out, roughly, with nothing planned into it.

Within forty minutes of Manresa

Short drives and short days. Any of these leaves the afternoon free, and none of them needs booking more than a day ahead.

The ochre buildings of Montserrat abbey at the foot of rounded rock pillars, with cloud catching on the peaks

Montserrat

Rack railway around €15 return · basilica ticketed Half a day

The closest big thing to Manresa and the easiest on a bad leg. The rack railway climbs 550 metres from Monistrol in about fifteen minutes and stops level with the abbey square, so the mountain comes without the walking. The boys’ choir sings in the basilica at 13:00.

  • Free car park at Monistrol-Vila, 20 minutes from Manresa
  • Rack railway trains and stations are adapted for reduced mobility; the two funiculars are not
  • The choir’s own site says 13:00 and 19:00 daily; other sources say not on Saturdays
  • Basilica entry is timed, so the 13:00 slot is the one to reserve
  • About 5 °C colder than Manresa at 720 m

The Romanesque church of Sant Benet de Bages, with its round apse and two square bell towers, seen through trees and cypresses

Sant Benet de Bages

Around €12, worth checking Two hours

A Benedictine monastery from the 10th century on the Llobregat, ten minutes from Manresa. A Romanesque cloister, and upstairs the summer rooms of the painter Ramon Casas, whose family bought the place in 1907. Flat, quiet, and mostly indoors if it rains.

  • One listing has it closed Mondays and Tuesdays and shut by 15:00 midweek
  • Saturday 9:00 to 19:00, Sunday 9:00 to 18:00, by the same listing
  • The cloister is on the level; the upstairs rooms are not

Cardona castle and its stone ramparts on top of a grassy hill, with town houses at the foot

Cardona

Salt mountain around €14 Half a day

Thirty minutes up the Cardener. A castle that held out until 1714 and is now a parador, so the view comes with coffee and no ticket, and below it a mountain of salt mined from Roman times until 1990.

  • The salt mountain tour goes 86 m underground on foot, so this one depends on the leg
  • Tours are guided and timed, mostly at weekends outside summer
  • The castle is a drive-up; the terrace and the bar are open to anyone
  • Cardona’s mushroom fair is usually late October, dates worth checking

Clothing stalls and shoppers at the Tuesday market on the sandy Plaça Major in Vic, with arcaded town houses behind

Vic on market day

Free A morning

Forty minutes east on the C-25. The market has filled the Plaça Major every Tuesday and Saturday for centuries: an arcaded square of sand, flat all the way round, with café tables under the arches. October is mushroom season and the stalls show it.

  • Tuesday 20 and Saturday 24 are the two market days in the week
  • Mornings only, winding down from about 13:30
  • Vic is where fuet comes from, and the shops around the square sell little else
  • Fog sits on the plain here on autumn mornings and lifts by eleven

Barcelona and Sitges

About an hour each way, so one thing per trip is plenty. Both picks in Barcelona are seated or step-free.

Branching stone columns inside the Sagrada Família, lit green and blue by the stained glass windows

Sagrada Família

Around €26 90 minutes inside

The one thing in Barcelona that cannot be seen from the pavement. The nave is step-free and the point of it is to sit down and look up, which suits us. Afternoon slots get the orange light through the west windows.

  • Online tickets only, timed, and they sell out weeks ahead
  • The towers are closed to anyone with reduced mobility, so the basic ticket is the one
  • A separate step-free entrance on Carrer de la Marina
  • Free entry with a disability certificate, by several guides; the threshold varies by source

Cabins of the Montjuïc cable car passing a pylon, with the rooftops of Barcelona and the Collserola hills behind

Montjuïc by cable car

Around €17 return Two hours

The city from a seat. The cable car runs 750 metres from the funicular station to the castle, with the port on one side and the whole grid on the other. A taxi to the lower station takes the hill out of it.

  • Closes around 19:00 in October; sunset is about 18:55 until the clocks change
  • Cabins are level-boarding and hold eight
  • The castle at the top is flat inside the walls
  • Pairs with the Sagrada Família on the same trip, by taxi rather than metro

The church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla above the palm-lined promenade and sand of Platja de la Fragata in Sitges

Sitges

Free, plus lunch A long lunch

About 75 minutes from Manresa. A seafront promenade that runs flat for two and a half kilometres with a bench every few metres, the church on its rock at one end, and lunch facing the water. In late October the sea is still around 20 °C and the town is half-asleep, which may be the point.

  • The film festival usually finishes the week before, so tables are easy
  • The church sits up a flight of steps; it looks the same from the bottom
  • The old town behind the front is cobbled and sloped
  • The C-32 through the Garraf tunnels is a toll road

The long day north, for Dalí

Two hours each way. Worth it once, and probably with a night up there rather than four hours of driving in one day.

The red Torre Galatea of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, topped with giant eggs, with the glass dome behind it

Dalí Theatre-Museum, Figueres

Around €20, sources disagree Two hours inside

Dalí built it himself in the burnt-out theatre of the town where Dalí was born, and is buried under the stage. It is in Figueres rather than Roses, which is 25 minutes further on at the coast. The building is the exhibit: a red wall topped with eggs, a glass dome, and a Cadillac in the courtyard.

  • Reported closed on Mondays outside July and August, which would rule out the 19th
  • Timed tickets, and midweek mornings are the calm ones
  • It is a converted theatre on several levels, so there are stairs; worth asking about the lift when booking
  • About 1 h 50 from Manresa by the C-25 and the AP-7

White houses with terracotta roofs along the sea wall at Cadaqués, seen across the water of the bay with scrub-covered hills behind

Cadaqués and Dalí’s house

House €15.50 online The other half of the day

Forty minutes beyond Figueres over a pass, and the reason to stay a night. A white town on a bay, and round the headland at Portlligat the fishermen’s huts Dalí and Gala joined into a house over forty years. Roses is on the way, for lunch on the front.

  • The house is not accessible: narrow stairs throughout, and the foundation says so
  • Advance booking always required, with entry in small groups every ten minutes
  • Open daily 10:30 to 18:00 until 31 October
  • The olive grove alone is €8 and on the level
  • The road in is 15 km of bends

Manresa itself

Os’s to show. Three that do not need a guide, all on or above the river.

What needs a head start

Nothing is booked. Three things are worth doing before the rest, because each one decides what the week can hold.

  1. Flights, and so the dates The 19th to the 25th is approximate. Everything in the calendar above shifts with them.
  2. A car For the week, or at least for the Cardona and Figueres days.
  3. Sagrada Família The only thing here that sells out weeks ahead. Timed, online only, and the afternoon slots go first.
  4. Dalí’s house, if we go Advance booking only, in small groups. Worth deciding first whether the stairs make it a no.
  5. A night near Figueres, if we go It turns four hours of driving in a day into two and two.

Prices and hours were looked up on 10 October 2026. The Portlligat and rack railway details are from their own sites. The Dalí museum, Sant Benet, Cardona and Sagrada Família figures are from listings that disagree with each other, so each wants checking on its own site before we rely on it.
